My gut reaction is that the tree must have fallen, so somebody cut down what remained.
It's finally spring. This tree should be growing. Not dead! :-(
I first reaction was the smell of sawdust and chainsaw fumes.
Mine, too. It wasn't what I expected...and as I took the photo, I heard others asking the same question I was asking: Can I trust that whomever was on the other end of the chainsaw did the right thing?
